How Much Weight Do You Need to Lose? Find Out Using Our Ideal Weight Chart

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

How can you plan a route with no destination in mind?

This is why a goal weight is so important. Without a concrete end result to dedicate yourself to you’re likely to just meander along and most likely give up at the first hurdle. But a goal weight will give the direction and a motivational push you need to beat the odds in the weight loss challenge.

But how do you set a goal weight? Set your expectations too low and you might quit before you even get started. Aim to high and you’ll just end up disappointing yourself. So what it realistic for your body?

We’ve put together this ideal weight chart so you can see what kind of weight might be achievable and healthy based on your height.

Height (Inches) Weight (Pounds)

4′10″ 102 – 131

4′11″ 103 – 134

5′0″ 104 – 138

5′1″ 106 – 140

5′2″ 108 – 143

5′3″ 111 – 147

5′4″ 114 – 152

5′5″ 117 – 155

5′6″ 120 – 159

5′7″ 123 – 163

5′8″ 126 – 167

5′9″ 129 – 170

5′10″ 132 – 173

5′11″ 135 – 176

6′10″ 138 – 180

*Note: This chart is only applicable to women aged 21-59. Outside of this age bracket go straight to your doc to discuss any weight issues you might be experiencing. This chart also excludes professional athletes, body builders and women who are pregnant. This ideal weight chart is for reference purposes only – before undertaking any diet or exercise regime check with your doc first.

If these figures seem a bit intimidating don’t worry. Just remember to break your weight loss journey down into manageable baby steps. Kind of like rest stops on the long road trip.

It can be really daunting to think about how much weight you need to lose. But just break it down. Going back to the road trip example, Instead of an 18 hour drive you think:

“well I’ll get up early and try to knock off the 5 hours (with a few rest breaks) before I stop for nice lunch” then you get back in the car and say to yourself “Hey I can do another 3 hours before 4:00pm” and “If I just do another 2 hours before calling it a night I’m over half way there!”

If you’ve got more than 30 pounds to lose, just break it down into smaller chunks.

For example you might:

  • Try to lose 7-10 pounds in the first month (because you lose weight faster in the beginning).
  • Take a week break and then try to lose 5 pounds over the next 30 days.
  • Take another 2 weeks off and have a crack at losing another 5 pounds over another 30 day period.
  • Then treat yourself, you’ve lost 20 pounds awesome! Have a massage, a day at the spa or buy yourself a new dress.
  • Then buckle down to lose another 3 pounds in 3 weeks. Followed by a 2 day break.
  • You only have 7 pounds left to lose so just keep doing what you’ve been doing to get this far and drop those remaining pounds slowly over the next 8 weeks.

It is really important to reward yourself and take little breaks. This will not only keep you motivated but it will prevent your diet from consuming your life.

It’s healthy to watch what you eat but if your diet is the only thing you think about day and night well that’s just not sustainable. By doing things more slowly your lifestyle changes will be more gradual and less overwhelming. This way the changes you make will become a part of who you are (with the occasional naughty moment) and you’ll keep the weight off for life.

So consult our ideal weight chart, set your goal and start losing weight today!
